Getting a massage therapy license in New York State can open the door to a wide range of career opportunities, but how long does it actually take? The timeline depends on required education hours, hands-on training, and licensing exams. At the Institute for Holistic Health, most students complete their training in about 1-2 years (12 to 22 months), depending on whether they enroll full-time or part-time.
The Institute for Holistic Health massage therapy program consists of 1,036 hours of classroom instruction, meeting New York State education requirements for licensure. These hours are designed to be completed over the 12–22 month period and include a balance of scientific study, technique-based instruction, and hands-on practice. Classes are held Monday through Friday at the Institute for Holistic Health’s campus in Poughkeepsie. Full-time students typically complete the program in 12 months, while part-time students, who will usually attend either morning or afternoon sessions, will complete the program in roughly 22 months.
Program hour breakdown:
The Institute for Holistic Health accepts transfer students with licenses from other states, this may shorten your overall timeline depending on prior education.
As a transfer student, you will fall into one of these categories:
Transfer Student A: Students who completed part of a massage therapy program in another state may transfer up to 250 hours toward the 1,036-hour program, subject to NYS approval and transcript review. Approved hours reduce the remaining time needed to graduate.
Transfer Student B: Students who completed a massage therapy program in another state must apply for New York State licensure and receive a Deficiency Letter outlining any required coursework. Only the remaining courses need to be completed at the Institute for Holistic Health, with timelines varying based on NYS requirements.

Once your hours are completed, graduates of the program will be prepared to apply for and pass the New York State Massage Therapy Licensing Examination, required to practice in New York State, and the MBLEx national licensing exam, which may support licensure in other states.
