Massage Therapy Licensing in NY: A Step-by-Step Timeline for Future Students

Becoming a licensed massage therapist in New York State involves a few clear steps:

1. Complete an Approved Education Program
2. Apply for Licensure
3. Pass the New York State Massage Therapy Examination

At the Institute for Holistic Health, full-time students typically complete their training in 12 months, while part-time students complete the program in approximately 22 months. Here is what the full process looks like from enrollment to licensure.

1. Confirm That You Meet the Basic Requirement

To qualify for a massage therapy license in New York State, applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have a high school diploma or equivalent

If you meet these basic requirements, you can apply for enrollment into licensed New York State Massage Therapy school.

2. Enroll in an Approved Massage Therapy Program

New York State requires future massage therapists to complete a state-registered program, or an equivalent program, containing at least 1,000 hours of instruction.

The Institute for Holistic Health is a state-registered program, and offers a 1,036-hour massage therapy program at our Poughkeepsie campus.

Our flexible program allows students to complete their required classes and hours as a full-time or part-time student:

• Full- time: Approximately 12 months
• Part-time: Approximately 22 months

Classes are offered Monday through Friday. A part-time student will often choose to take classes in the morning or afternoon. The schedule of classes you set for yourself determines how quickly you will complete the education portion of the licensing process.

3. Complete Your Required Program Hours

The Institute for Holistic Health’s 1,036-hour curriculum combines scientific education, massage therapy techniques, professional preparation, and practical experience.

The program includes:

• 450 hours in the sciences, including anatomy and physiology, myology and kinesiology, pathology, and neurology
• 260 hours of massage therapy instruction, covering Western and Eastern techniques and professional development
• 326 hours of hands-on practice, including supervised clinic experience with real clients

These hours prepare students for both the NYS licensing examination and the day-to-day responsibilities of working as a massage therapist.

4. Complete the New York State Application Process

As you approach graduation, you can begin preparing your New York State licensure application.

All applicants must submit Form 1: Application for Licensure to the New York State Education Department. The Institute will also submit Form 2: Certification of Professional Education directly to the state to confirm that you completed your program.

You must also complete an approved CPR course within the three years before your license is issued.

5. Take the New York State Massage Therapy Exam

Once you’ve received approval, you can schedule your licensing exam. The New York State Massage Therapy Exam covers the knowledge and skills needed to practice safely and professionally. The current exam contains 140 questions.

Exam subjects include:

• Client assessment and evaluation
• Treatment planning
• Massage therapy techniques
• Anatomy, physiology, and pathology
• Treatment of specific conditions
• Professional ethics and responsibilities
• Business practices
• New York State laws and regulations
• Western and Eastern massage methods

6. Receive Your New York State License

After you complete the education, application, CPR, and examination requirements, New York State can issue your massage therapy license.

Once your license and registration are active, you can begin practicing as a licensed massage therapist in New York State. Your professional license remains valid for life unless it is suspended, revoked, or annulled, but you must keep your professional registration current to continue practicing.

7. Continuing Education Requirements

After receiving your New York State massage therapy license, you will need to complete 36 hours of continuing education every three years to maintain your registration. Continuing education allows licensed massage therapists to build on their training, explore new techniques, and continue developing their professional skills.

How Do I Become a Licensed Massage Therapist in New York If I Trained in Another State?

If you completed a massage therapy program in another state, you must apply to the New York State Education Department for licensure. The state will review your previous education and issue a Deficiency Letter outlining any additional coursework needed to meet New York’s licensing requirements. You can complete the remaining courses at the Institute for Holistic Health, with the timeline determined by the requirements set by New York State.

I Started Massage Therapy School in Another State. Can I Transfer My Hours to a New York School?

If you partially completed a massage therapy program in another state, you may be able to transfer up to 250 hours into a New York State-registered massage therapy program. The courses must meet New York State standards and be approved by the school you plan to attend.

At the Institute for Holistic Health, we review your official transcript and course descriptions to determine which courses can be applied toward our 1,036-hour program. Any approved transfer hours can reduce the amount of education you need to complete before graduation and licensure.

Can I take the licensing exam before I finish massage school?

No. Your massage therapy education must be completed and approved by the New York State Education Department before you can take the licensing examination. Your application, fee, and required supporting documents must also be submitted.

Do I need to take both the New York State exam and the MBLEx?

The New York State Massage Therapy Examination is required for students following the standard path to licensure in New York. The MBLEx does not replace the New York exam, but it may be useful when applying for licensure in other states. Requirements vary by state.

Can I work as a Massage Therapist while waiting to take the licensing exam?

Some graduates may qualify for a limited permit after completing all licensing requirements except the examination. The permit allows eligible graduates to work under the personal, on-site supervision of a massage therapist who is licensed and registered in New York.

A limited permit does not allow private practice. It is also unavailable to applicants who previously held a limited permit or failed the New York State examination.
